Why You Need a DSL on Retainer

If you’re an Alternative Provision provider, freelance tutor, or independent education setup, having a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) on retainer ensures that you remain compliant, responsive, and proactive in safeguarding children and young people.

Key Reasons to Have a Retained DSL:

🔹 Legal & Ofsted Compliance – Schools, AP providers, and education setups must meet statutory safeguarding duties under KCSIE (Keeping Children Safe in Education), Working Together to Safeguard Children, and Prevent Duty. A retained DSL ensures you stay compliant.

🔹 Expert Safeguarding Oversight – Handling safeguarding referrals, liaising with local authorities, social care, and police, and ensuring correct safeguarding procedures are followed.

🔹 No Need for Full-Time Staff – Hiring a full-time DSL can be costly. A retained safeguarding lead provides the same expertise at a fraction of the cost while ensuring ongoing compliance.

🔹 Handling Disclosures & Serious Concerns – If a safeguarding issue arises, having an expert on hand to advise, support, and ensure the right action is taken can be critical.

🔹 Support for Freelance Tutors & AP Providers – Many small education providers don’t have the capacity for an in-house DSL but still need safeguarding expertise. A retained DSL service provides that security without the overheads.

🔹 Flexible, Cost-Effective Protection – Whether you need ad-hoc support, regular safeguarding audits, or full oversight, a retained DSL ensures you always have safeguarding expertise at your fingertips.
